Poker – A strategic game or a game of luck?Poker is a fascinating card game which is becoming more and more popular. Times have changed from when poker was regarded as a game of luck and was played by criminals in dark basements. Today, poker communicates an entertainment and fun factor, and is played in casinos as well as online.
In poker, there are different variants which differ significantly regarding playing style. The most popular variant is “Texas Hold’em”: Every player gets two cards which he has to combine with five additional cards in a certain way (see rules). These five cards are at every player’s disposal, which means that at the end of a betting round a variety of card combinations is possible. The best five card combination wins! The players bet on their hand’s probability of winning, without knowing the cards of the opposition. In poker, the goal is to win as many chips as possible from other players.
But the game is not only about accidentally having the best five card combination. It is also a game of strategy, psychology and self-discipline. It is possible to calculate the chance of winning a hand and to make the correct moves in every situation, to become successful in the long run. Indeed the distribution of cards is random, but because the players can decide freely when and how much they want to bet, strong strategic and psychological skills are needed.
Finally, the game is also about calculating the odds of the opposing hand. Luck only plays a dominant role in the short run. Over a number iof hands, everybody gets the same amount of good and bad cards, which means the good players will prevail. Because of this fact, poker as compared to roulette is not a game of luck, but a very complex strategic game which makes it possible to earn money.
